Description: |
Students learn how to conduct research by working on an independent, original project under the mentorship of a research scientist. With guidance from their mentor, students design the project, implement the research plan, analyze the data, and report the research results (orally and in writing). Techniques and fundamentals of biology are taught because this knowledge is essential in research, but the emphasis in this program is on methods of discovery and communication of new knowledge, not on the mastery of established facts. On the final day of the program, students present their results at the annual Summer Student Symposium, which is attended by their mentors, peers, and parents. An objective of the Summer Student Program is that research experience acquired during participation in the program will enable high school students to enrich the science curriculum at their high schools. Eight major areas can be described as the research focus of TJL: cancer; bioinformatics and computational biology; developmental biology; immunology and hematology; metabolic diseases; neurobiology and sensory deficits; genomics; and resource-related research. |
